TEXTS: Isaiah 8: 18-22
INTRODUCTION:
Every believer in Christ Jesus is encouraged to desire the gift of prophecy. This is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit – 1Cor. 12: 7-10. The Holy Spirit reveals past, present and future events through prophecy, vision and dreams. There are three major sources of prophecy. They are: the Holy Spirit, lying spirit (demons) and the human spirit –
1Cor. 14:39. The scripture warns us not to accept prophecies from just anyone – 1Jn. 4: 1-3. You have to subject both the prophecy and the prophet to certain spiritual tests.
STEPS TO TEST PROPHECIES To test prophecies, take these steps:
Test if it agrees with scripture, Isa. 8: 20. If any prophecy contradicts the scriptures, it is full of darkness and should be avoided.
Any prophecy that does not glorify Jesus, revolves around salvation or is contrary to what Jesus Christ taught, is from the pit of hell. Rev. 19:10
Also, you must consider the conditions that accompany the prophecy. 2Chro. 7:14
A prophecy must also be publicly acknowledged so that other prophets can judge the prophecy.
Check out the vessels. If the prophet is an adulterer, a person that does not pray, a glutton or a self-made prophet, it is likely his prophecies are not from God.
Check out for the fulfillment of previous prophecies.
CONCLUSION
Do not allow anyone to manipulate you in the name of prophecy. Stick to the word of God.
